Sea Sunday - Raft Race
This annual fundraiser for the lifeboat station in Courtown attracts thousands of people to the village each year. If you are planning on going along, then I would suggest that you head to Courtown in plenty of time to be sure of the perfect vantage point to see the race.
The Lifeboat shop is open from 11 a.m. onwards so you can pick up a bargain and support the Lifeboat at the same time. There's a fine range of Lifeboat souvenirs, and other gifts. The shop is staffed by volunteers so funds raised go to the RNLI.
There's lots to see and do on the day itself. As well as enjoying all the amenities Courtown has to offer, people can drop into the Lifeboat House on the North Pier from 11 a.m. to view the Lifeboat and meet the crew. There's also face painting and music during the day and Giggles the clown will be around to keep the kids entertained.
Again this year, Michelin star chef Derry Clarke and his chefs will be cooking up a treat with burgers on the pier beside the Boathouse. All the proceeds going to the RNLI.
The traditional Blessing of the Boats will be at 2:30pm. The ceremony will bless all sea going vessels and those who use the sea, and pray for their safe return. The occasion will be used to remember those who have lost their lives at sea.
Straight afterwards, the annual charity Lifeboat Raft Race kicks off, with a planned start time of 4 p.m., once all the rafts have made it to the start line.
If you're thinking of entering a raft, make sure you register with Áine Stafford on (087) 2871670 in the days beforehand.
